The newest film’s writer and you may director, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess video game, to own mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, his manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever brother (Nina Foch) worked at the gambling enterprise and you can old a great corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The newest caustically epigrammatic script, the latest cast’s suavely controlled gestures regarding love and threat, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and smartly assertive pictures (as well as their political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet intricate spectacle a hidden antique of one’s category.” [ ten ]

Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice absolutely nothing woman which brings out the fresh best in your and you can Ellen Received is the smooth and you will slinky vixen who gets your with the jams. Thomas Gomez are greasy because the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb really does a new ready trip just like the an exhausted police inspector who in the end closes the scenario.
